Housing Budget Speech

Siobhain's temporary accommodation campaign featured across the national press throughout Autumn, including on BBC News, ITV News and Channel 4 News. The Autumn Budget, she hoped, would offer a tangible solution for the 128,000 children who will wake up homeless on Christmas Day.

But just a further £1 billion for Local Authorities was committed in the budget - enough for just 15,000 new homes, despite the Government set target of 300,000 new homes per year.

The last time that 300,000 homes were built in one year in England was almost half a century ago in 1969 back when Councils and Housing Associations were building new homes. In fact, since 1939, the delivery of more than 200,000 homes per year in England has only happened in years when there have been major public sector house building programmes.

And that's why Siobhain is calling for two RTBs! She is calling upon the Government to grant Local Authorities the right to build and the right to buy so that housing can be let to families on low incomes at social housing rents. If the Government target of building 300,000 new homes is to be achieved, councils simply have to play their part.
