Work experience placements for young people in Mitcham & Morden, 2015-2016

My Work Experience Placement scheme is now open once again, in its fifth year!

Anyone who’s been unemployed soon after leaving school or university will remember how dispiriting it is not to know where that first opportunity is going to come from. So I launched this Work Experience scheme back in 2011 to help young people in Mitcham & Morden get the experience they need to find the career they want.

Take a look at the 2015/16 Work Experience Booklet here

We are fortunate to have 65 participating employers who are offering over 100 opportunities for people aged 18-24 years old in the constituency, covering everything from law experience to social care, retail to accountancy, and construction to medicine - and many more. In sum, these placements offer something for all young people whatever their skills, talents or exam results.

Opportunities are designed for young people aged 18-24 but we won’t turn away those trying to find work who are older. However, to be eligible to apply, applicants must live in the constituency of Mitcham & Morden.

The placements begin in January 2016 and last for a minimum of 8 weeks. The placement work experience is unpaid, but I’ve been running these schemes for 5 years now and they’ve led to hundreds of young people getting into full-time paid employment.

If you know a young person trying to find work please tell them about this scheme, and advise them to do the following:

  1. Take a look at our Work Experience Placement booklet that lists all of the opportunities that are available - and decide on a role that you think is right for you

  2. Call Billy Christie on 020 8542 4835 or email billy@mmlp.org.uk for a reference number. If easier you can drop-by my office at 1 Crown Rd, Morden, SM4 5DD (behind the Civic Centre)

  3. Contact the participating employer for an interview quoting your reference number

  4. Come along to my Careers Advice morning on Thursday 10th December at Merton Civic Centre, Morden

And do come along to my ‘Careers Advice Morning’ on Thursday 10th December at Merton Civic Centre, Morden. At this event there will be lots of information on how to get the best from this opportunity along with advice on interview techniques. We’ll also hear from Ann-Marie who has been on the scheme and can tell you about her experience. The morning lasts for two hours from 11am to 1pm. Coffee will be served from 10.45am with a FREE lunch at 1pm so participants can chat with us informally and ask questions. Anyone wanting to come along should book their place by calling 020 8542 4835 or emailing billy@mmlp.org.uk.

We'll be sending copies of the booklet to all households including someone aged 18-24 years old in Mitcham & Morden, and to many community groups. Please contact Billy by phone or email if you'd like a paper copy of the booklet.
